If you are to paste pictures then attack anybody who asks for them to be correctly headed (as on other blogs) then I make myself the second to criticise. No title is better than the wrong title as people are misled with incorrect information and this is then put to print in local books etc. as with recent editions to the shelves of Waterstones and others.

Terry, if you care to read what I've written you'll see that I've copied the photos from someone else’s collection and am not responsible for the titles. I have also invited comments, which would be the place to note any inaccuracies for all to see.

My collection consists of photographs of originals, mainly but not exclusively from the Ramsgate Library collection. I spent many hours with Charles Busson identifying the pictures and titling my copies on hand written labels. It takes time to replicate these notes for publishing.

Having scanned my collection I posted them for the benefit of anyone interested in Ramsgate History and hoped that people would comment on them. What I didn't expect was personal criticism.

Forgive me if I've missed something, but I fail to see what the criticism has achieved. You've identified a potential problem but have done nothing to rectify it. As a member of The Ramsgate Historical Society would it not have been better to part with your knowledge and post a correction with the picture(s) for all to see?

I have a personal dislike of unconstructive criticism so to prevent it happening again I've now removed all the pictures except those that Michael linked to. Apologies to the other 300 plus visitors to the site who didn't complain. I hope to publish them again one day when I've added titles.

You say you have a dislike for personal criticism then why post the remarks you made to the people who pointed out the mistakes why not correct them as did Michael? Simple enough - job done.
I've been told it was your association stated with Charles Busson that partly caused some of problem as C.B.'s book captioned the photograph of the High St. with 'the site of the Palace Theatre'.

It's a shame you have taken the route of removing the pictures as removal of the captions until they could be checked would have been more positive move.

If you decide in future to post the pictures I could help if information was required.

If you return to thanet-online Michael Child's Blog then you will see some of my corrections in red I forwarded to Michael personally a few days ago (not including info on windmill) and he posted them for all to see.

Terry, this is all getting out of hand. Yes, maybe I have been a bit hasty removing the pictures. After a 4 am start and a troublesome day, I returned home around 9 pm yesterday to find your comments. I didn’t need this after having done something that I thought would be useful and appreciated, so I removed the pictures.

Just for the record, I didn’t say I have a dislike for personal criticism, I said I had a personal dislike for unconstructive criticism.

This all started when an anonymous poster implied on another blog that my research wasn’t up to much. I can almost dismiss an anonymous comment, but when you echoed his sentiments under The Ramsgate Historical Society banner I became irritated.

In case you’re not familiar with digital media, the captions are embedded in the bitmap scans and it takes time and specialist software to edit them out. To be honest, I hadn’t looked closely at the pictures for some time and I had forgotten that they contained erroneous titles. Why did you not comment on the inaccuracies when invited to do so beneath the picture? Why did you choose to criticise instead of comment?

Thank you for the offer of information, but I have my own information which will take time to type up for publication. You will have your chance to correct, comment on or add to the information when they are published, if you wish to do so.

I had nothing to do with Charles Busson’s book, and it appears I have obtained my copy of the picture you refer to from a different source, as his copy doesn’t have a caption. My association with the late Charles Busson was one of mutual respect and your implication that we were somehow involved in a “dirty deed” is only worthy of an apology.

How can a post by someone giving the correct information be unconstructive?

When directed to Michael's blog I then read the comments made by others and sent the correct information to him for posting - but then you criticise me for not rectifying the problem!?! No appology for that then?

And now you have taken the attitude of posting in big red letters saying its the fault of The Ramsgate Historical Society that the pictures have been withdrawn.

hANDBAGS AT 20 PACES GENTLEMEN I am sorry the photos have been removed I for one would have loved to see them. I feel you have both behaved foolishly and many are worse off as a result. But that said the Pictures are great SHAME I CANT SEE THE REST

Terry, there’s some confusion here. You appear to be commenting here about what’s happening on Michael’s blog. My concern is with what happens here where the pictures are hosted. I’ve certainly not received any information from you, and nothing has been posted with the pictures. Shall we draw a line under the matter now?

Nice one Don, and you’re right in what you say. I over reacted by removing the pictures in a grumpy moment. I’ve now reinstated them on Picasa which allows titles, comments and I'm slowly referencing them on Google Maps in the album. I've only just started on the titles so please bear with me and please add information if you can. I will endeavour to remove the offending embedded titles later this evening.

Well done Phil I am really looking forward to seeing them and I wont mind if they are wrongly an-noted cos I tried to add a caption to a photo this morning and gave up after 30 minutes of trying.
